El Nino, the strongest interannual variability, has great global impacts via atmospheric teleconnection, but its impact is quite various among inter-El Nino events and season due to the distinct teleconnection patterns. In this study, we will show strong seasonal dependency of ENSO impacts on East Asia climate, particularly during developing summer and winter. During early winter there are strong positive correlations between ENSO index and temperature/precipitation over East Asia, while the relation is suddenly decreased during late winter. It is demonstrated here that a slight seasonal change in tropical precipitation pattern can lead to a dramatic changes in the extratropical teleconnection.
In addition, during summer of El Nino developing phase, significant ENSO impacts on East Asia are only appeared during mid-June and Mid-August. It is found that the subtropical precipitation anomalies, which emerge in this particular season, are important for the teleconnection to East Asia. It is demonstrated that the subtropical responses are related to the seasonal evolution of western North Pacific monsoon, which leads to strong seasonal dependency of ENSO impacts.
